The Vermont Education Leadership Alliance, a joint endeavor of the Vermont Superintendents Association, the Vermont Principals Association and the Vermont School Boards Association and supported by a grant from the U.S. Department of Education, is dedicated to helping educational administrators and school board members who are committed to creating and maintaining effective leadership teams focused on improving student learning. VELA strives to assist teams in surfacing the assumptions under which they want to operate, coming to a common understanding of the basis of their work, identifying the activities that need to be accomplished as a district to promote student learning, clarifying the roles and responsibilities of all members and determining indicators to evaluate progress and celebrate success.
To assist with this effort, the VELA Legacy was developed as a resource for school leaders. The Legacy strives to initiate crucial conversations among school leaders in a manageable and practical approach rooted in the everyday operations of the school. It provides questions for school leaders (board members, superintendents, and principals) to answer in each functional area of school operations and tasks for leaders to consider. These questions and tasks are designed to provoke dialogue among school leaders, the first critical step in coming together as a system focused on improving student learning. The questions may trigger individual reflection, but ultimately must be discussed, debated and resolved as a team. The questions will be answered differently in different district across the state, but the challenge to answer them belongs to us all.
For more information on how to use this resource see the Appendix. For more information on the Vermont Education Leadership Alliance contact your member association.
The VELA Legacy is also available as a desktop reference guide. In the spring of 2005 printing and distribution costs of this resource were supported by a grant from the Wallace Foundation's State Action for Educational Leadership Project (SAELP). As a result, VELA was able to provide the desktop version to every school board chair, superintendent, and school principal in Vermont. Additional print copies of this resource may be purchased for $10.00 each by contacting the VSBA office at 802-223-3580.
